The Founders
The museum was brought to life by a dedicated group of volunteers united by their Finnish heritage: Ailiin Andrews, Vivian Heikkinen, Linda Katila, Raili and Matti Lehtonen, Laura and Veikko Malkamaki, Niles Oinonen, John Ollila, Viola Pohto.
2002 — The Idea is Born
Museum idea born — originator: Linda Katila. Original name: Fairport Finnish Museo Association. First meeting: November 18, 2002 at Zion Luther Center.
2003 — Taking Root
Monthly meetings begin. Constitution accepted. Finnish Monument dedicated July 5, 2003.
2004 — A New Name
Name officially changed to "Finnish Heritage Museum." Gene Kangas appointed Museum Director. Website goes live. Membership grows to 40 dedicated members.
2005 — Grants & Agreements
Finlandia Foundation grant received. Lease agreement signed with Fairport Village Council. Pavers Dedication ceremony held — September 18, 2005.
2006 — A Home of Our Own
First meeting held at 301 High Street — the museum's permanent home. Knights of Kaleva donated $2,000 toward building renovations. Building renovations proceed throughout the year.
2007 — Grand Opening
Grand Opening: June 30 – July 1 weekend — a two-day celebration. Hundreds of members, friends, and community members attend. The Finnish Heritage Museum opens its doors to the public for the first time.
